Grammar Rules: Essential, Nonessential, and Fake

Grammar refers to the arrangement, function, and relationships of words in terms of how they are linked to each other to create phrases, sentences, and clauses. Grammar is the set of rules that govern language, and each language has a different grammar. The prescribed grammar of a certain language is the standard grammar of that language. It may mean that the different dialects and unique grammatical patterns of sub-languages under that language are grammatically incorrect if their grammatical patterns do not agree with each other.

Descriptive grammar is taking the grammar of a group, dialect, or sector of a country for what it is. Descriptive grammar sees that particular grammatical pattern as correct to that particular group, and usually does not contest it. The rules of grammar, punctuation and usage are classified as essential, nonessential and fake. Writers and editors, especially, have to pay close attention to the essential rules, but can be more lenient in the application of the nonessential rules.

Fake rules are the rules that can be safely ignored. Essential rules are the rules that are absolutely necessary for clear and unambiguous communication. Nonessential rules are not necessarily required for clarity and can be ignored in favor of style if needed. Nonessential rules are still important, but only if it will make the message being conveyed easier to understand. Fake rules are not really rules of grammar, but are just matters of word choice, conventional usage, style and other things that may have been taught incorrectly to us as children, but are still acceptable in the language.

The problem with nonessential and fake rules is that some readers tend to doubt the writer's credibility if they think that the writer is misusing the language by not adhering to every grammar rule. Some technical reviewers, in fact, tend to nitpick on the grammar rather than the coherency of the document. Writers should be able to figure out a way to balance their style with the different rules set in the society, whether nonessential or fake.
